Tornado Warning vs Tornado Watch

The wind is howling outside. The weather is taking a turn for the worse. You’ve decided to watch some TV to take your mind off it. Then, the buzzing starts. Your programming is interrupted to inform you of a tornado warning. Or is it a tornado watch? And just what’s the difference?

Tornado Watch Vs Tornado Warning

When a tornado watch has been issued for an area, it means conditions are suitable for a possible tornado. There isn’t a tornado currently, but one could possibly form. There’s no emergency yet, but you should be prepared just in case. A tornado warning means that a tornado is imminent or perhaps has already been sighted. Now is the time to get to someplace safe. Go to the lowest floor and avoid windows. For the most part, warnings cover a smaller area than a watch. It is best to shelter in place in such emergencies. You may want to notify friends and family to ensure they’re keeping themselves safe. Keep the news on to stay informed about weather developments. An interior room with no windows is safest. A basement is best, but a bathroom is generally safe as well. If you are outside or in a vehicle, get to a shelter right away.
